A good beginners guide to choosing a new set of Golf Clubs
Buying a set of clubs can be a daunting challenge when starting out. There are so many different brands and variations to choose from. I will lay out some guidelines below how to select your new clubs,
Irons – A guide to buying easy to hit irons
A standard set of irons you will get will include a 3 iron to pitching wedge. A 3 iron will hit the ball the furthest of the iron set because the loft degree (low degree angle) of the face and also the length of the shaft (longer).
I currently play myself with a set of mizuno blades and they feel great and provide great ball control, however with these they are very unforgiving as the face is very small and the don’t have any cavity back.
In choosing your started set of blades make sure you get a set of cavity back either semi or full. This will provide you with much more comfort and consistency when you are starting out.
How to Choose the best iron shafts for you
You need to be aware that when you are buying new clubs you need to select a shaft stiffness. The reason for this is to suit the individuals strength and swing speed. I myself use extra stiff shafts but it does not necessarily mean you need extra stiff.
If the shaft is too stiff you will hook the ball as the club head will flex back to early and if it is to flexible you will fade the ball as the club head will not return to square in time during impact. I may suggest that you go to your nearest club and ask to have 2 clubs with different shaft stiffness and test them out on the range. Just make sure they are both a 6, 7 or an 8 iron and this will give you a good indication. I myself would use a 7 iron.
Another option you could do would be to get professionally fitted whereby a Pro would measure your swing speed and analyse your swing and then make a call on the ideal shafts.
If you are not sure and you do not want to spend to money on figuring it out my opinion would be to just go with a medium stiffness and you wont be too far out that way. You can always make the upgrade again.
